Titanium Backup Root is an app that allows root users to backup/restore data and apps

Bear in mind that this app is for root users only. It won't work if you haven’t got superuser access. Once that’s solved, you’ll be ready to use probably the most complete backup app on the market. Let's zoom in on its features.

Backup/Restore tab

Here you’ll find a list of the apps installed on your Android and at a glance you’ll see if you already have any backups. There's a colored key that shows all user apps (white), system apps (red) and mixed (green) whose data will be synchronized. From there you can copy, freeze, uninstall, clear data, launch the app, and in case there's already a backup of the app, restore or delete the copy. You can perform all of this one-by-one or in predefined batches. You’ll find them by clicking on "menu" and "batches". This way you can backup "all the user apps" or "backup new versions" or "backup new apps & new versions", for example. You can set the batches whichever way you want with the "filters" option.

Scheduled tasks

Since backing up manually every time can be tedious, Titanium Backup Root includes a scheduled task feature. You can set the filters or predefined batches you want the app to backup automatically. In the free version, you’re only allowed two scheduled tasks per week.

As you can see, the app is fairly simple and the only difficulty is getting the hang of the colored key to know what you need to backup and what you don’t. Remember there's no need to back up system apps since the new ROM will include them, or Google sync apps such as calendar or contacts.

This is the free version of Titanium Backup Root. Unlike the paid version, this one just allows you to make one copy of each app. That means you won't be able to save copies of different versions of the same app. Likewise, you won't be able to schedule more than two tasks per week. The paid version (€4.99) hasn't got these restrictions and what's more, it includes automatic app re-installing with Hypershell and synchronization with Dropbox.
